Where the roof runs are in Ahwatukee
The village divides on this fairly cleanly, and knowing which side you sit on saves you a phone call.
The original neighborhoods north of Elliot are almost entirely single story from the seventies and early eighties. The duct climbs about eight feet inside the wall and exits the nearest exterior elevation. No roof involved. More on those streets.
Everything built from the mid eighties onward is where the roof work lives. The Foothills and Lakewood, much of Mountain Park Ranch, and nearly all of Club West. Two stories, laundry upstairs, termination on the tile.
The custom and hillside lots are their own category, because a stepped multi-level house can put the laundry on an intermediate floor with no obvious relationship to either the roof or an exterior wall. Those get traced on site.
The code arithmetic, and why it matters here
This is the part homeowners are almost never told, and it accounts for a great deal.
Code permits a dryer exhaust run of 35 feet of equivalent length. Each ninety-degree bend takes 5 feet off that allowance and each forty-five takes 2.5. Two bends leaves an effective 25 feet. Three leaves 20. Four leaves 15.
A Foothills roof run is commonly 25 to 35 feet of actual pipe carrying two or three bends. Work that through and a lot of them are sitting on or past the allowance from the day they were installed.
Nobody cut a corner and nothing is defective. Manufacturers and code officials both make room for it. What it means practically is that the run has essentially no tolerance, so a quarter inch of deposit on the pipe wall is the difference between an appliance that works and one that does not.
Duct length allowances are set out in the International Residential Code at Section M1502.4. Local amendments vary, so confirm with the City of Phoenix before altering any duct route.

Why the vertical ones fill faster
Length
More pipe means more internal surface for material to adhere to. Thirty feet carries roughly four times the surface area of eight.
Bends
Airflow slows through every turn, and slower air cannot hold what it is carrying. Each bend becomes a deposit point, and the moment anything settles there the channel narrows, which slows the air further and deposits more. The process accelerates on its own.
Gravity
The overlooked one. In a horizontal duct, material that fails to exit simply rests where it lands. In a vertical run it comes back down and stacks at the base, at the first bend, or behind the appliance.
That last point is also why the machine stays running while we work the cap. Its own exhaust carries what we loosen upward and out, rather than letting all of it drop back into the pipe we are trying to clear.
Why other companies find reasons not to
Because it is heavier work with real exposure, while the straightforward money is in ground-level side-wall terminations. Roof work means the ladder comes off the truck, you climb two stories, and you cross concrete tile in full desert sun without breaking a single piece of it.
Before booking anyone for a two-story Ahwatukee home, ask one question: is roof access in that price?
Walking your roof
Enough years on tile means knowing how to move across one and which points will carry weight. Concrete tile is unforgiving about that, and a fractured piece becomes water ingress the first time a storm properly delivers.
Where a roof will not take us safely, we stay off it. Steep pitch, heat-damaged or already-cracked tile, any of it. The run gets cleared from inside instead and you hear exactly that from us. Trading damage to your roof against a faster job is not a trade we are prepared to make.

Worth sorting while we are up there
- A flap corroded or lint-jammed open, which is an open door for wildlife
- A hood missing or split, letting rain straight into the duct
- No guard on an otherwise sound cap, on a street backing the preserve
- A cap screened over by a previous owner, which code does not permit, because screens load with lint
- A cap never properly sealed into the tile

Roof vent questions
Do you charge extra for roof terminations?
No. They are covered by the $99. In the Foothills a roof termination is the ordinary case for a two-story home rather than an exception worth billing separately for.
Will you go up on tile?
Yes, and we know where the load-bearing points are. Concrete tile splits where weight lands wrong. If a roof is not safe to walk, because of pitch, sun damage or tile already broken, we say so and clear the run from inside instead, and you are told that is what happened.
Is there a limit on how long a run is allowed to be?
There is, and it catches a fair number of homes here. Code permits 35 feet of equivalent length and deducts 5 feet for every ninety-degree bend, 2.5 for every forty-five. Three bends leaves about 20 feet of allowance. Plenty of Foothills runs are on or past that line as originally built.
How do I tell whether mine goes out the roof?
If the laundry room is upstairs and there is no flap on an exterior wall nearby, it goes out the roof. Look for a small hood on the tile above the laundry side of the house. In The Foothills, Lakewood and Club West, assume yes.
What about the older single-story streets?
Mostly not an issue. The original Ahwatukee housing is single story with side-wall terminations, so the roof work here is concentrated in the later neighborhoods.
What if the cap itself is damaged?
We tell you and show you. A split hood or a flap stuck open is how birds and rain get in, and dealing with it while we are already up there beats a separate trip later.
