Why there is a number on this website at all

You will notice most companies in this trade will not print one, and it is not because the work is too variable to quote. It is that a figure delivered in your laundry room, with the appliance already dragged out and your morning committed, carries weight a phone quote does not.

We would sooner lose the call than operate that way. If $99 is more than you want to spend, you have found that out for nothing rather than after somebody is parked outside.

The housing under your lint screen is the one nobody knows about

We argue for this extra harder than the other one, and the reasoning is straightforward.

The slot your screen drops into is the mouth of a chamber running down inside the machine. Anything finer than the mesh goes straight past it, as does whatever brushes off the screen when you pull it out, and all of it settles in that chamber. There is no drain, no service interval, and most owners have no idea it exists.

So it loads up. Five years, ten, twenty. And because it sits at the intake end of the whole system, it is throttling airflow before any of it reaches the duct you have just paid to have cleared.

How it actually gets cleaned

Depends on the machine. Plenty of dryers allow the housing to come apart, in which case we take it apart, clean it out and put it back together. Others route their exhaust in a way that makes that impossible.

On those we use an air rod that drives the packed material out of the cavity with a vacuum box connected on the far side, so what comes free is captured rather than redistributed through the machine or into the room. Either route ends with an empty cavity, which is the whole objective.

We have taken apart dryers where that chamber had never once been opened, and repairing what running that hot for that long had done came to more than the machine was worth replacing.

That is an observation, not a pitch. Element, thermostat, blower wheel, and the labour to reach any of them, adds up quickly on a unit already ten years old. At that point the technician advises against the repair and you buy a replacement, which proceeds to do exactly the same thing on exactly the same untouched chamber.

Ninety-eight dollars now against eight hundred to fifteen hundred for a new machine is not a difficult call.

Do it if the dryer has five or more years on it, if nobody has ever opened the housing, if you have pets, or if you are on one of the dust-exposed streets.
Leave it if the machine is close to new. Put the ninety-eight toward next time.

And the hose upgrade?

The transition hose is that short flexible length between the back of the appliance and the duct in the wall. Ribbed foil has two failings: it folds flat when the machine presses against it, and each corrugation catches lint. Rigid transition duct has neither.

In Ahwatukee this appears two ways. In the original housing it is often the piece the house was built with, brittle and partly collapsed on its own. In the newest builds the hose is sound but the laundry closet is shallow enough that closing the doors folds it nearly shut. Code leans this way too: the duct proper is meant to be smooth-walled rigid metal, with the flexible section kept short rather than doing the work.

Do it if you have foil flex, or the machine sits hard against the wall.
Leave it if rigid duct is already fitted and sound. We will look and tell you which you have.

How often to budget for it

Ten months is the interval for an ordinary household. Treat that as a maintenance schedule rather than a nudge.

Plenty of people here treat a slow dryer as the cue to call somebody. By then you are not approaching the interval, you went past it roughly a year ago.
